Putting the Shine on Paws

This client wanted a metallic look to the major scales on his feet, more than the dull silver cast into the latex. That required a special application of color and some shining up, as seen in this in-progress photo. The paw on the left is done, the paw on the right has just been started. Claws have not been installed at this point.

Foam Feet

We needed a pair of foot cores that we could easily remove from cast feet, but that had all the toes separate. So, one big block of silicone later - a fast but not necessarily inexpensive solution - we're able to pull foam feet that match the plaster feet used in making the original sculpture. These will be used in the production of DarkFang's soon-to-be-available form-fitting paw feet.

Buddha, Avery Island, Louisiana

According to on-site signage: "This Buddha was built for the Shonfa Temple located northeast of Peking by the order of Emperor Hui-Tsung (1101-1125). Its builder was Chon-Ha-Chin, most noted of ancient Buddha makers. The temple was looted by a rebel general who took the statue as part of his loot and sent it to New York to be sold ... The statue came to the notice of two friends of E.A. McIlhenny who purchased it and sent it to him as a gift in 1936."

That's Emperor Huizong as currently transcribed into English, the dates are his reign. The Buddha was apparently removed from it's original shrine in the 1920s, during the warlord era of China. I've been unable to find any other information on the Shonfa Temple, other than a mention that it was destroyed in the 1920's. E.A. McIlhenny was the president of the McIlhenny Company, makers of Tabasco sauce, for fifty-one years; Avery Island is where Tabasco is made.

This photo was taken by Ysengrin's father in 1970, a few years before a vandal removed most of the Buddha's right ear.
